By Small and Simple Things
My bedroom dresser is a very special place. Everything on it means a great deal to me. I keep it nice and clean so the 7 things on it are obvious and I can be reminded daily of the lessons I have learned from each item. All of these things were given to me by random people in my life. I am sure these people had no idea what kind of impact it would have on my life. Sadly, all but one have come and gone from my life, but I always think of their generosity when I look at my dresser.
One item that really stands out to me is a simple Precious Moments water globe that plays "That's What Friends Are For". Inside the globe is a pair of friends in a boat holding hands. This was given to me in my lowest time of my life. I had been married for less than a month (not to James, but my first husband) and had realized that my marriage was not going to work and I couldn't do anything to repair it. I had made plans to move to Boston to live with my Dad until the divorce was finalized. At that time, I was going to school at Purdue University North Central. I had to finish out the semester before I moved out of the state so I moved back home. I have never felt so alone and abandoned in my life. All of my close friends had moved away to go to school and some of my family avoided me because they thought I was trying to get attention.
I went to my biology lab one day and sat next to the same girl I had sat next to for a couple of months. We had said nothing more than hello to each other. I think she could tell that I had been crying. She gave me a big hug and told me that she is always there for me if I needed to talk. The next class, she handed me a present and then left. Inside the present was this water globe and a very thoughtful card. She never knew what was going on in my life and after she gave me the gift I never saw her again. I knew at that point that I would be able to deal with my problems and move forward. She reminded me that I am never alone through my trials. Even though I may feel like everyone else has abandoned me, there is always someone else I can turn to, who knows what I am going through. I know this girl was meant to be in my life for this short period to teach me this lesson.
I have decided to try something new with my blog. I have read many other blogs that participate in what they call "Thankful Thursdays". I would like to start this. Every thursday I am going to do a post about something I am thankful for. It might be something simple or profound (we will see how I feel that day). I am hoping that this will help me remember or learn important lessons and be more thankful for my life.
